How it works
Finish needed is floor area × number of coats ÷ coverage per coat, plus a waste allowance. Freshly sanded bare wood absorbs more on the first coat.
You may also need: Laminate flooring, Paint.
How to measure
Measure the room length and width and multiply; subtract areas that will not be finished, such as under fixed cabinets.
Worked example
Here is an example using the calculator’s default values:
Inputs
- Floor area: 215 ft²
- Coats: 3
- Coverage per coat: 450 ft²/gal
- Waste allowance: 10%
Result
- Finish needed (estimate): 1.58 gal
- Per coat: 0.53 gal
Tips
- Coverage varies a lot between products; enter the figure on the can.
- Respect the drying time between coats.
- Do not mix oil-based and water-based products; stay with one system.
Common mistakes
- Too few coats: one coat wears through quickly in busy rooms.
- Forgetting that the first coat soaks in more.
- Finishing before all sanding dust is removed.
Frequently asked questions
How many coats of floor finish are needed?
Usually a sealer plus two topcoats; busy areas may need three.
How long between coats?
Follow the product; water-based finishes often allow recoating within a few hours.
Oil or lacquer?
Lacquer forms a hard film; oil soaks in and is easier to spot-repair but needs more frequent care.
